ARCHIVED - Policemen in Spain disciplined for rescuing abused animals
The two officers have been forced to move department after rescuing 40 neglected animals while on duty in Spain
The Justice Police (Jupol) union has spoken out in defence of two National Police officers from the Alcalá de Henares Police Station in Madrid who were subjected to disciplinary procedures when it came to light that they had been rescuing abandoned and mistreated animals while on the job. The men have both been moved to different stations and the union is calling for their immediate reinstatement.
Branding the officers as heroes, Jupol confirmed that the agents have carried out more than 20 interventions to save the lives of animals while on patrol over the past two years, rescuing some 40 pets that suffered continuous abuse.
The police commissioner disagrees, stating unequivocally that the agents, who worked as part of the Operational Night Response Group, did not have the competence to work as vigilante animal rescuers and should not have dedicated their time on duty to saving animals.
For its part, the Police union bestowed an award on the officers for their “brave” work in “ensuring the rights of animals” where other forces turned a blind eye. Both agents were referred to the Disciplinary Regime Unit of the National Police, but no official legal action was ultimately taken against them.
