Popular chocolate chip cookies withdrawn from Spanish supermarkets
Traces of the ‘burundanga’ drug were found in the sweet treat which has been distributed all over Spain
The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has issued an urgent recall for a batch of Gerblé gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. The sweet treats, manufactured in France, were found to contain traces of scopolamine, more commonly known as the drug burundanga, as well as the drug atropine.
Frequently prescribed to treat motion sickness and post-operative nausea and vomiting, if consumed in large doses burundanga can lead to delirium, psychosis and even death due to muscle paralysis.
The cookie has been distributed to stores and supermarkets all across Spain. The affected product is batch number 51914913 with an expiration date of September 20, 2023. The biscuits are sold in a 150-gram non-refrigerated cardboard packet.
Health authorities have asked any customers who have purchased the affected chocolate chip cookies to refrain from eating them and to return them to the point of sale. The anomaly has been reported to the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (Sciri) and so the contaminated batches should no longer be available on supermarket shelves.
According to the European Food Alert Network, the first notification was made by Spain on June 30. After the Spanish notice, it was verified that the batch had French origin and was distributed both there and in Andorra and Spain. Added to these three affected countries is Germany, where an alert has also been issued for the cookies.
