Portugal imposes restrictions on travel from Spain for Papal visit
All travellers crossing the border from Spain will have to present identity documents until August 7
Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Portugal between August 2 and 6 to attend the World Youth Day events in Lisbon. As a result, security will be stepped up on all border points with Spain and anyone wishing to cross over will have to present a valid identity document, both adults and children.
These controls will be in place from Saturday July 22 until Monday August 7.
The security service in Portugal has assured that “it will not close the borders” but that travellers will be checked at random “based on information and risk analysis” to cause the minimum amount of disruption and delays possible.
The Portuguese government is expecting a huge influx of people from Spain and other neighbouring countries to witness the Papal visit and deems the measure necessary due to the extensive media coverage and the complexity of the event.
According to an official statement, the main objective of the border checks is to prevent “the entry into national territory of citizens or groups whose behaviour may be likely to compromise the security of national and foreign citizens who participate in the event.”
Portugal implemented similar controls during Pope Francis’s 2017 visit.
Travellers planning to drive from Spain for the event can cross into Portugal at 21 different points: Valença-Viana do Castelo, Vila Verde da Raia-Chaves, Quintanilha-Braganza, Vilar Formoso-Guarda, Marvão-Portalegre, Caia-Elvas, Vila Verde de Ficalho-Beja, Castro Marim, Monção, Barrancos, Rio de Onor, Melgaço, Montalegre, Tourém, Vinhais, Ponte da Barca, Vila Nova de Cerveira, Pomarão, Termas de Monfortinho-Castelo Branco, Miranda do Douro and Mourão.
