Portugal scraps tolls on several roads to Spain
The A22 Algarve-Andalucía motorway is just one of the roads that will soon be free
Portugal has just approved a bill that will eliminate tolls on motorways which connect with Andalucía, Castilla y Leon and Galicia from next year, an endeavour which will cost the government somewhere in the region of 157 million euros.
In just a few months, several routes to Spain will be toll free, including the A22 in the Algarve, which connects the Portuguese district with Huelva in Andalucía, the A4 of Transmontana and the Marão tunnel, which connects with the province of Zamora, the A13 from Pinhal, the A23 from Beira, and the A24 which travels as far as Ourense.
This measure will also free other autonomous communities from payment by 2025, such as Castilla y León and Galicia, when there are no other alternative roads by which to reach Spain by car.
The tolls, which have been in force for more than 14 years, sought to generate cash flow at a time when the Portuguese economy did not show its current muscle.
In Spain, 26,400 kilometres of roads belong to the State, 75,300 kilometres to the autonomous communities and 67,700 to the county councils.
The State-owned highways support 52% of the total traffic and 65% of the heavy traffic. In addition, of the overall road network, 17,551 kilometres are high-capacity roads (mainly motorways and dual carriageways). Just over 1,400 kilometres of these have tolls.
