ARCHIVED - Post-Brexit rise in Britons applying for golden visas in Spain
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Spain has experienced a surge in demand for these visas, which offer UK citizens unlimited access to Schengen countries
Moving to Spain has become a lot more tricky for Britons since Brexit, and UK citizens have to go through a lengthy visa process if they wish to stay longer than 90 days out of each 180. For this very reason, many people are choosing the Golden Visa route, whereby Brits who invest in the Spanish property market can remain in Spain for as long as they like.
A Ministry of Migration spokesperson explained: “People who used to spend four months straight in their homes are suddenly realising they can’t anymore.
“Many Brits who had never thought about it are looking at the golden visa option to have unrestricted access.”
Britons who spend a minimum of 500,000 euros on a Spanish property, take out health insurance and have enough funds to cover their stay can gain unrestricted access to the Schengen zone, and more and more UK citizens are attracted by the possibility of remote working from Spain.
UK citizens who don’t want to or can’t apply for a golden visa also have the option of a non-lucrative visa if they wish to move to Spain; this must be applied for from Britain and they must be able to show proof of adequate funds to support themselves.
However, other countries like Malta and Cyprus have come under heavy criticism for offering similar schemes, with some EU officials feeling the golden visa attracts wealthy criminals.
Although Spain reserves the right to refuse the visas if the applicant has a criminal record or is on the country’s list of undesirables, the process has come under all the more scrutiny since the war in Ukraine, as golden visas were once very popular with Russian citizens.
