ARCHIVED - Prestigious GC32 catamaran race to be held in the Mar Menor in November
The GD32 Racing Tour features 30-knot racing on America’s Cup-style catamarans and the final event on the 2021 tour will be at Lo Pagán
It has been confirmed that in November of this year San Pedro del Pinatar will host the GC32 Mar Menor Cup sailing event, race organization being based at the Club Náutico in Lo Pagán.
This will be the last event on the 2021 GC32 Racing Tour, considered to be the Formula 1 of the sailing world, and features 30-knot flying catamarans. The tour allows regular sailors, both pros and keen amateurs, to get a taste of state of the art, flying, foil-born yacht racing at high speeds, as pioneered in the America’s Cup but at a fraction of the cost.
Teams compete on a five-event circuit, mostly across Southern Europe with the aim of providing easy logistics, with venues chosen to provide optimum conditions for teams to fly their catamarans for the maximum amount of time, and the holding of the final race in the Mar Menor from 3rd to 7th November consolidates the reputation of the lagoon as one of the premium venues for sailing events.
The 2020 GC32 Racing Tour was due to visit Oman, Riva del Garda (Italy), Lagos and Villasimius (Sardinia) but all events had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
