Priest in Spain arrested for selling illegal Viagra
He is one of two people charged with drug dealing offences
Two people, one of them a priest and the other his partner, have been arrested in the Spanish town of Don Benito on suspicion of selling ecstasy and Viagra.
Spanish police arrested the pair on Monday in the town in the province of Badajoz on charges of endangering public health by trafficking in drugs.
The Guardia Civil operation was nicknamed ‘Botafumeiro’ after the type of thurible used to spread incense around Spanish churches.
The Organised Crime and Anti-Drugs Team of the Guardia Civil in Badajoz (EDOA) had been investigating for five months after noticing that the couple seemed to be dealing drugs from their own home.
As well as serving customers who came to their house to buy the drugs, they also sent some by post to other parts of Spain.
In a raid on the house, 20 police officers searched the house and seized around 2,100 grams of mephedrone, also known as orthomephedrone. This is a recreational designer drug with stimulant effects similar to methamphetamine or MDMA, more commonly known as ecstasy.
Police also seized two precision scales; 3,370 euros allegedly obtained from the sale of the drug; and several blister packs with tablets of sidelnafil, colloquially known as Viagra, which is a prescription-only drug in Spain.
With the incriminating evidence, both the priest and his partner were arrested for an alleged crime against public health and once the corresponding proceedings had been carried out, they were placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority hearing the case, which ordered the imprisonment of the woman. The priest was released on bail.
The investigation is still ongoing.
