Radical change in weather this weekend: Spain forecast Aug 22-25
Temperatures could drop by as much as 10ºC in parts of Spain as the rain and storms make a comeback
Weather warnings activated for Friday
Rain, hail, thunder and lightning will make a dramatic comeback in parts of Spain this weekend with the arrival of a storm that could also cause temperatures to plummet by as much as 10ºC.
The next couple of days should be settled enough but once we enter the weekend proper, the rainfall will intensify and become more widespread.
Although the approaching fronts will be weak enough on Thursday August 22 they will still cause some disruption, and several regions, including Murcia, the Valencian Community and Andalucía have been issued with yellow alerts for storms and torrential downpours.
But even as the rain pours, daytime temperatures will continue to rise, easily exceeding 35ºC along much of the Atlantic coast.
In most of the country, stable weather is expected on Friday August 23 with predominantly clear or partly cloudy skies. However, it will become more overcast as the day goes on in central Spain and the southeast, where there’s a good chance of scattered showers and storms.
Few changes are expected temperature-wise in mainland Spain but the mercury will fall sharply in the Canary Islands, a precursor to the weekend in the rest of the country.
As we head into Saturday August 24, the rain that will begin in Galicia in the morning will spread far and wide by the late afternoon, bringing storms as far south as the Valencian Community and the mountains of the southeast.
Thanks to a cold air mass from the Atlantic, daytime temperatures will plummet across the board, but the change will be especially noticeable in the northwest of Spain.
On Sunday August 25, the rain will ease off in Cantabria but intensify in the east of the country and it could reach the Balearic Islands. At the moment, the heaviest showers are forecast in the Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, inland Murcia, eastern Andalucía and Madrid.
The mercury will continue to fall and daytime temperatures could dip as much as 8-10ºC lower than previous days in the likes of Rioja, Navarra, Aragón and the interior of the Valencian Community.
The weekend nights will also be much cooler, although the thermometers still won’t fall far below 20ºC in large parts of Andalucía, on the Mediterranean coasts, in both archipelagos and in parts of Extremadura and southwest of Castilla-La Mancha.
