ARCHIVED - Rain in Murcia... but nowhere near enough
The brief spell of rainfall in the Region this weekend was barely enough to wet the ground for parched farms

The downpour on Saturday April 29, which left 26 litres of rainwater per square metre in Murcia, was followed on Sunday 30 by rainfall at various points, with an average of 2.2 litres per square metre across the whole of the river basin district, according to the Segura Hydrographical Confederation (CHS).
These rains were heaviest in the headwaters and on the left bank. In Yeste, 11 litres were recorded; in Caravaca, 8.8; and in Ricote, 8.2. In total, the average rainfall in the whole area was 43 cubic hectometres.
With the exception of Murcia, Gálvez stated that in general these were storms that “do not alleviate the serious drought we are suffering”, adding that there is an “absence of a coherent policy of the central government on water issues”.
“Rainfed crops are very badly affected, and irrigated crops are pending the water that is made available to farmers by the Confederation. It is urgent to have the drought wells ready throughout the entire hydrographic demarcation, as well as desalinated water to face the summer and the next autumn-winter campaign,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MeteOrihuela website condemned the “lamentable state” of the Segura River on Sunday as it passed through Beniel, due to a dense layer of foam which formed on the surface of the water and which was apparently caused by illegal chemical dumping in this area.
