ARCHIVED - Record number of daily infections in Alicante province: Valencia Covid update January 13
Hospital admissions in Alicante hospitals have doubled in two weeks
The sixth wave of the pandemic has hit Alicante province hard with a record 7,474 positives in a single day, according to the latest update from the Valencia region's Ministry of Health.
For two consecutive days there have been more than 6,000 infections reported in the province, which has seen hospital admissions double in two weeks with 538 patients currently on general wards, 68 of whom are in ICU.
This trend is mirrored across the Valencia region, which has registered 19,278 new cases in the last 24 hours, and nine deaths.
A breakdown of today's health data shows:
Coronavirus cases
The Regional Ministry of Health has reported 19,278 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, significantly higher than the 16,611 infections reported on Wednesday January 12, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 794,586.
By province: 3,460 have been recorded in Castellón (93,141 in total), 7,474 in Alicante (288,517) and 8,344 in Valencia (412,926).
There are two unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 139,926 active cases, which represents 17.36% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,495 people admitted to hospital with Covid (up from 1,427 on Wednesday), 196 of them in ICU (four less): 216 in the province of Castellón, 22 in ICU; 538 in the province of Alicante, 68 of them in ICU; and 741 in the province of Valencia, 106 in ICU.
In the last 24 hours, 14,917 patients have overcome the virus, meaning 657,831 people have recovered from the disease since the start of the pandemic.
By provinces, the discharges are distributed as follows: 73,454 in Castellón, 235,078 in Alicante and 349,243 in Valencia. The total number of unassigned discharges remains at 56
Fatalities
A further 9 Covid-related deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall death toll to 8,270: 936 in the province of Castellón, 3,176 in Alicante and 4,158 in Valencia.
The deceased are five women, aged between 53 and 91, and four men between the ages of 74 and 84-years-old.
Vaccination data
There has been no update with regards to vaccinations, but as of Friday January 7, a total of 9,784,304 coronavirus vaccines had been administered.
