ARCHIVED - Recycled sculpture unveiled on the seafront in Santiago de la Ribera
San Javier backs recycling scheme proposed by local 5-year-old primary school pupils
During May the Town Hall of San Javier confirmed that plans were afoot for the installation of several new sculptures in public places, and last Friday the promise was made good in Santiago de la Ribera when a monument made from recycled materials was unveiled on the Paseo de Colón.
The unveiling of the sculpture, which will remain in place throughout the summer, was timed to coincide with World Environment Day, as the creator of the piece, Teodoro Martínez, the head of the Ecopark of San Javier, used discarded items such as pallets, seats, a headboard and a railway sleeper in giving vent to his creative urges. The result is a figure measuring 160cm in length and 115cm in height, depicting a fish while at the same time helping to raise public awareness of the need to recycle waste.
Attending the presentation were 5-year-old pupils at the Sagrado Corazón primary school in San Javier, who have come up with their own ideas related to protecting the environment. These include bins made from milk and juice cartons, the idea being to install them at bar terrace tables in order to discourage people from discarding rubbish on the ground.
