Red warnings issued as Storm Herminia hits Spain: Weather forecast Jan 27-30
Almost all of Spain is on high alert for wind, rain and treacherous sea conditions early this week
Weather alerts for Monday January 27
Storm season is well and truly upon us. Hot on the heels of some dreadful weather brought to Spain courtesy of storms Garoé and Éowyn is Storm Herminia, which is rapidly crossing the Atlantic and expected to make its impact here from Monday January 27.
Storm Herminia has already wreaked havoc in northern Spain over the weekend but as we head into the last week of January, this front will result in powerful gusts of winds that will spread across the entire country.
"We are entering the toughest hours of this powerful storm," warned meteorologist Martín Barreiro, pointing out that "practically all of Spain" will be affected this Monday by Storm Herminia, which will only spare the Canary Islands, protected by an anticyclone.
These adverse weather conditions will continue throughout Tuesday but Herminia will begin to lose strength by mid-week, only to be replaced by a “new and deep Atlantic storm” that will again bring strong winds, intense rain and even worse sea conditions.
Monday January 27
The storm will begin moving across Spain from early morning to reach the Mediterranean area and the Balearic Islands on Monday evening. Cloudy or overcast skies will predominate and there will be widespread rainfall, although this is unlikely to reach the extreme southeast.
The most intense downpours are expected in Galicia, the west of the Northern Plateau and the Central System, other mountain areas and the Strait area.
Despite this, day-time temperatures will tend to rise in most of Spain, hitting a very warm 26ºC in parts of Murcia.
Red alert for wind, snow, high waves: Galicia.
Orange alert for wind, rain and high waves: Andalucía, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Region of Murcia, Basque Country, Valencian Community.
Yellow alert for wind, rain and high waves: Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Rioja, Cueta.
Tuesday January 28
Tuesday will be very overcast with widespread rain again on the cards, although it’s less likely in the Balearic Islands and the east coast of Spain.
Temperatures will drop across the board, most noticeably in the east of the country and inland. As a result, frost will become more widespread and intense, affecting mountains in the northern half and south-east of Spain.
Red alert for wind, snow, high waves: Galicia.
Orange alert for wind, rain and high waves: Andalucía, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country.
Yellow alert for wind, rain and high waves: Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid, Region of Murcia, Navarra, Valencian Community, Melilla.
Wednesday January 29
Although there is still some uncertainty, it is likely that a cold front will pass from the northwest to the southeast, associated with a new and deep depression located north of the country. This will result in persistent rain in northern Spain, extending is a more moderate way to the rest of the Atlantic coast. It should remain dry in the Mediterranean.
Both day and night-time temperatures will fall slightly.
Orange alert for wind and dangerous sea conditions: Cantabria, Galicia, Basque Country.
Yellow alert for wind and dangerous sea conditions: Andalucía, Asturias.
Thursday January 30
Yet another northern weather front is expected to carry in a very cold air mass on Thursday, resulting in cloudy skies and heavy rain in the far north and the Balearic Islands, although showers are possible in the entire country.
Temperatures will continue to fall and no part of mainland Spain will reach higher than 18ºC or 19ºC.
