ARCHIVED - Referendum to decide if Spain should have a monarchy
The results of the referendum will be neither official nor binding in Spain
In a somewhat unusual move, on May 14 next year the Monarchy or Republic State People’s Consultation Platform will hold an unofficial referendum to establish how people in Spain think the country should be governed. The move, which is not supported by any public administration and therefore won’t be binding, was postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The referendum, which is backed by several minority parties, will consist of ballot boxes being installed in the streets where citizens can vote on whether they believe Spain should have a monarchy or be a republic.
According to the organisers, “the majority of the current population did not have the opportunity to vote on the 1978 Constitution, but those who could did not have the option to choose between a monarchy and a republic.”
However, data from the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) suggest that the Platform may be making more of an issue than it needs to, as only 0.3% of respondents checked the Monarchy box as their main concern during a recent survey. In fact, of the 44 problems listed, Spain’s Royal Family only featured at number 35.
On the other hand, far more citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the current political regime. ‘Political problems in general’ ranked in fourth position and was voted for by 22.1% of those surveyed. In addition, some 20.3% of people were concerned by the perceived ‘bad behaviour’ of politicians.
