Region of Murcia brings forward flu vaccination campaign amid early season warning
People aged over 60, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions can now book their vaccinations
Health centres across the Region of Murcia have opened their appointment books for this year’s flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign, with the programme starting earlier than usual amid warnings that the seasonal virus could arrive sooner.
The vaccination programme for flu and Covid-19 began last Friday in nursing homes and facilities for people with disabilities, before opening on Monday September 21 to people considered particularly vulnerable.
This includes residents aged over 60, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions. Eligible residents can currently arrange an appointment by phone or in person at their health centre, while online bookings through the Murcian Health Service website and app will become available from Thursday September 24.
The Regional Ministry of Health explained that the campaign has been brought forward because the epidemic phase of seasonal flu and Covid-19 could begin earlier this year. Officials from Spain’s National Centre for Epidemiology expect it could arrive around the middle of October.
Children are also being offered protection earlier, with the Region’s school vaccination programme starting on Wednesday September 23. Flu vaccinations will be given at schools using an intranasal vaccine, meaning children won’t need an injection.
There’s also been a change to the age range covered by the school programme for the 2026-2027 season. Children up to the age of 11 can now receive the flu vaccine through the scheme, compared with children up to the age of nine last season.
The Health Ministry explained that protecting children is particularly important because flu can result in a significant number of cases among youngsters and can be more serious in very young children, particularly those under two.
Health officials are encouraging eligible people to get vaccinated not only to protect themselves but also to help reduce the spread of flu within the wider community. This can provide additional protection for people who are particularly vulnerable to complications and help reduce pressure on healthcare services during the winter months.
