Relief as rain calms northern Spain, but south still sizzles: Weekend weather forecast July 20-23
The hot temperatures haven’t gone for good yet, but there will at least be some more relieving rain and storms
Spain weather forecast, Friday July 21
We’re seeing the back of Heatwave Charon now, and all of Spain and southern Europe breathes a sigh of relief as the stifling, muggy air actually becomes breathable again.
That said, for the most part weather conditions in Spain will remain sunny and very hot this weekend and as we move into next week.
This Thursday July 20, large parts of the south and east of the country along the Mediterranean Sea are on alert for hot weather still, and there will even be thunderstorms crashing down in some high-altitude parts of the southeast as atmospheric pressure is released.

For Friday July 21, there will also be some strong showers and storms in the Pyrenees in northeastern Spain, while the western Canary Islands can expect very strong gusts of wind. Temperatures will begin to decrease, but there will still be “significantly high temperatures” in the southeast, Málaga and Mallorca, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The rainstorms in northern Catalonia are due to continue on Saturday 22 and there is the risk of flooding as up to 20mm of accumulated rainfall per hour are expected in some parts. For the most part, though, it will be sunny on Saturday and Sunday 23 with scattered cloud cover, especially in the north of the country along the coast of Asturias and Cantabria. These areas will see some heavy rainfall over the weekend which continues as we move into Monday and Tuesday next week, and maximum temperatures during the day will not go beyond the mid-20s.
Menorca, meanwhile, will be on yellow weather alert for a “sudden rise of sea level” so people should be extra careful while on the beaches of the Balearic island.
The biggest relief for many will be that the hellish temperatures should mostly be behind us, although it will still be getting up to the mid- and high-30s every day in the south of the country and Seville and Cordoba will predictably get the worst of it, possibly even exceeding 40ºC again on Sunday.
