Remembrance Sunday Service in Camposol
The service was held at Los Palacios Garden of Remembrance, Memorial Park in Camposol Sector A
The Ex- Serviceman’s Association Mazarrón District (ESAMD) held a Remembrance Sunday Service at Camposol’s Los Palacios Garden of Remembrance, part of the Memorial Park in Camposol, Sector A, on Sunday November 12 starting at 12 noon. Over 100 people attended including Mazarrón Councillor Carmen Navarro.
Rev Bill Coyle of St Nicholas Ecumenical Church in Camposol officiated, thanking and welcoming all who attended and going on to explain the origin of Remembrance Sunday. He then asked those present to join in singing the hymn “O God our help in ages past” after which he invited ESAMD President Paul Mounser MBE to give the Act of Remembrance in the form of reciting the poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
we will remember them.
The “Last Post” was then played followed by a minute’s silence and the “Reveille”.
This was followed by a prayer given by Rev Coyle and The ESAMD President gave a reading based on the poem “In Waters Deep” by Eileen Mahoney.
In ocean wastes no poppies blow.
No crosses stand in ordered row.
There young hearts sleep beneath the waves.
The spirited, the good, the brave.
But stars a constant vigil keep.
For them who lie beneath the deep.
And when your span of life is passed.
He’ll meet you at the “Captain’s Mast.”
So dry your tears and lift a glass.
As they can never lonely be.
For they served and died at sea.
The Lord’s Prayer was then recited by those congregated followed by a laying of wreaths by:
Ex- Serviceman’s Association Mazarrón District
Royal Lifeboat Association
St Nicholas Ecumenical Church, Camposol.
The ESAMD President was invited to read out The Kohima Epitaph:
When You Go Home.
Tell Them of Us and Say.
For Your Tomorrow.
We Gave Our Today.'
The Hymn “Jerusalem” was then sung followed by the poem "“Remembered Still Those Souls”, by Ernie Rowe, recited by Baz Hamilton BEM.
Remembered still those souls who tried
To save the world, but many died.
A moment stolen for a tear,
As we recall those unlived years.
The camaraderie that flew those souls
back home to those they knew,
And loved them dear and held them close
But for our sakes released to foes
The silence that they leave behind
Is space to calm the troubled minds of those they loved –
And can’t rewind.
Again this day we give our thanks
For those returned from serving ranks
And them ‘as gave it all away
Forever in our minds will stay
The hymn “I vow to thee my country” was then sung.
The Remembrance service was closed by Rev Coyle who recited the blessing for “Those Deployed on Active Service”.
AlmightyGod,
stretch forth your mighty arm
to strengthen and protect the armed forces:
grant that meeting danger
with courage and all occasions
with discipline and loyalty,
they may truly serve the cause
of justice and peace; to the honour of your
holy name, through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
It was also noted that another plaque had been added to the dais which is the centre point of the Garden of Remembrance in memory of former Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol Silvana Buxton, who passed away in October. Mazarrón Council recently announced that Central Park which is also in Los Palacios, Sector A is to be renamed Silvana Elisabetta Buxton Park.
