Right-wing Spanish politician arrested for drug trafficking
The VOX candidate is standing for election in Madrid on May 28

The VOX councillor in the City of Parla, Madrid and number three on the party’s list for the May 28 elections, has been remanded in custody without bail. Ana González Martínez, 38, has been accused of drug trafficking, money laundering and the illegal possession of weapons following a raid on her Toledo home.
When Police carried out a search at the property she shares with her soldier husband they discovered that a complex system used to cultivate around 5,000 marijuana plants had recently been dismantled. A number of firearms, quantities of cocaine, cash and mobile phones were also seized.
The house had also been illegally hooked up to the electricity grid. Two other detainees linked to the same crimes have since been released in bail having surrendered their passports.
Ms González Martínez has a degree in Business Studies and combines her role as a VOX councillor, for which she receives and annual salary of 21,500 euros, with a second role as Head of Quality, HR and Purchasing.
The leader of the right-wing party in Madrid, Rocío Monasterio, confirmed that his party learned of Ms González Martínez’s arrest from “the press” but that "the presumption of innocence comes first".
However, he went on to say that “if everything is confirmed” by the authorities, then “her immediate resignation” will be sought.
It turns out that the Police have been tracking the politician and her husband for months, convinced that they were trafficking drugs in the southern part of the region. Ms González Martínez was allegedly in charge of surveillance for the outfit and also fronted a number of commercial companies which the authorities suspect were used to launder the proceeds.
Ironically enough, an election campaign video was released recently in which the arrested councillor slammed the increase of “crime and drug sales” in the City of Parla. It has since gone viral.
