ARCHIVED - Rudest and most polite cities in Spain revealed, according to study by UK-based research company
The most-ill mannered behaviours include shouting in public and being offensive towards workers in Spain
Spain is one of the world's favourite tourist destinations, adored for its gastronomy, climate and culture. Spaniards are well-known for being passionate and expressive, as well as friendly and charming, but not all that glitters is gold.
UK-based research company Censuswide has conducted a study through the e-learning Preply Platform to find out which are the most polite and which are the rudest cities in Spain.
More than 1,500 Spain residents in 19 different areas of the country were interviewed and asked how often they encounter rude behaviour and where, responding on a scale of 1 to 10.
And the study concludes that the four most ill-mannered and uncivil cities in Spain are Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Granada, Alicante and Elche, while the three most polite cities are Vigo, A Coruña and Valencia.
The list of bad behaviour includes: being preoccupied with your mobile phone in public, not letting people past, being noisy in public, not paying attention to strangers, talking on a phone on loudspeaker in public, closed body language, not respecting personal space, being rude to employees, not tipping and jumping queues.
The study has shocked Helena Sampedro, from Radio Club Tenerife, who believes "it is a little unfair" that Santa Cruz de Tenerife has taken the title of the most rude city in the country.
She believes that the perception of rudeness may be due to the fact that Santa Cruz "is a very compact city, they have closed us off from the sea, the nearest beach is 10km away, and it is dirty, where the atmosphere is not calm".
In contrast, Jacobo Buceta, from Radio Vigo, is delighted his city has been named the place the most polite in Spain, boasting the "best quality of life".
"We are very wealthy, and being wealthy is very popular and makes people happy," he said.
