ARCHIVED - Ryanair baggage handlers strike at 22 Spanish airports until the new year
The work stoppages will cause disruptions across Spain from October until January
More disputes over pay and working conditions have led ground handling staff for Ryanair to announce strike action at 22 Spanish airports. The work stoppages will begin on October 28 and continue periodically until January next year.
The affected airports are: Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Alicante,Seville, Mallorca, Ibiza, Valencia, Girona, Santiago de Compostela, Reus, Tenerife Sur, Arrecife, Jerez, Santander, Las Palmas, Zaragoza, Fuerteventura, Mahón, Almeria, Valladolid, Tenerife North and Murcia.
In a statement this week, USO, the union representing the baggage handlers, explained that workers want to reopen negotiations surrounding several issues such as shift work and occupational risk prevention that have been “paralysed since 2020”.
The list of demands is extensive but among the most pressing concerns are wages for relief workers, shift structures and paid leave to attend medical appointments and summons for judicial proceedings.
Ryanair workers have been called on to down tools in a series of 24-hour strikes between October 28 and November 1, and partial stoppages every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in November. These strikes will take place from 4am to 7am, from 12pm to 3pm and again between 9pm and 11pm.
The same partial stoppages have been scheduled for December 6, 10, 16, 17, 18, 22 and 23 while a full strike will operate from midnight on December 8, 11, 30 and 31.
Finally, during the month of January 2023, 24-hour strikes have been called on January 6 and 8.
The union representing the baggage handlers is the same one which has launched legal action against Ryanair for its supposedly unfair negotiation tactics during the cabin crew strikes in Spain this summer.
And Ryanair isn’t the only airline causing chaos for travellers this winter, as cabin crew with the Spanish airline Vueling have announced industrial action between November and January.
