Ryanair flight from UK to Spain diverted over rowdy passenger
The Liverpool flight was scheduled to go directly to Tenerife but was forced to make a diversion
A routine Ryanair flight from Liverpool to Tenerife took an unexpected turn when it was forced to make a detour to Lisbon due to a disruptive passenger at the weekend.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of Sunday August 11, left a plane full of frustrated travellers grounded in Portugal for an hour and a half.
The flight, which departed from Liverpool John Lennon Airport as scheduled at 4.40pm, was en route to the Canary Islands when the unexpected diversion occurred. The plane touched down at General Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon at 7.15pm, much to the surprise of those on board.
In a statement, Ryanair explained the sudden change in course, attributing it to a passenger who became unruly and disruptive mid-flight.
"This flight from Liverpool to Tenerife (11 Aug) diverted to Lisbon when a passenger became disruptive onboard," a Ryanair spokesperson said. "Crew called ahead for police assistance and the aircraft was met by local police upon arrival who removed the passenger before this flight continued to Tenerife."
The flight eventually landed in Tenerife at 10.45pm.
Adding to the evening's disruptions, another flight from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, operated by easyJet, encountered an unrelated issue. The flight, destined for Málaga, took off from Liverpool at 8.40pm but never reached the Costa del Sol.
Instead, it circled over north Wales before returning to Liverpool, landing just before 10pm.
easyJet issued a statement confirming the technical issue that forced the plane to turn back and remain grounded overnight.
"We are sorry for any inconvenience this will have caused and did all we could to minimise the impact of the disruption, providing hotel accommodation and meals for those who required them," the statement added.
