ARCHIVED - Ryanair Spanish cabin crew strike comes to an end
Strikes have been called off even though no agreement has been reached with some of the unions in Spain
The industrial action by Ryanair cabin crew in Spain which began in August 2022 will not continue beyond its January 7 provisional end date, the USO union has confirmed, despite the fact that no formal agreement has been reached between the workers’ representatives and the airline.
Back in October, the budget carrier negotiated a deal with CCOO, the largest union of cabin crew in the country. Ryanair agreed to higher pay for junior staff, annual salary increases for the next three years and less variable incomes for all staff. However, the smaller USO union rejected this offer, instead taking the Irish airline to court, claiming it had violated the rights of workers to strike.
The courts voted in favour of the union, which has since insisted that the carrier has not shown "the slightest attempt to approach" them or respond to their demands.
The industrial action caused major chaos across Spain when it began, resulting in countless delays and many cancelled flights. However, as time went on and the company drafted in crew from different countries, the impact lessened and the strikes became largely ineffectual.
Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson has described the cabin crew strikes as “absolutely unnecessary.”
"They are planning strikes in the middle of the negotiation. The main function of a union is to improve the conditions of its members and the company tries to reach agreements to be sustainable. This relationship has been dysfunctional in the last four years," he added.
Other unions such as UGT, Sitpla and ART have joined the USO in questioning the legality of the collective bargaining agreement made with CCOO, arguing that it should not apply to the staff they represent as it violates the right to freedom of association.
However, the National Court disagreed and has ruled that the pay deal does not imply any harm to union freedom.
