Safety tips for driving in windy and snowy weather in Spain
What’s the best way to stay safe on the road if driving in a snowstorm?
Blizzards, driving snow and strong winds can all make driving a treacherous undertaking, and only the most skilled of drivers should venture out in such adverse conditions. For those who absolutely have to drive when it's snowing, the DGT traffic authorities in Spain have recommended taking a look at the forecast before setting off on a trip and has issued some practical advice for keeping your car on the road in inclement weather.
How to drive in snow
The DGT’s first line of defence is prevention, and the Traffic authorities recommend that drivers avoid unnecessary trips when it is snowing heavily. If a journey must be undertaken, winter tires or snow chains can be a big help.
When driving in snow, always turn on dipped headlights, reduce speed and increase the safety distance: the braking distance on wet roads is always shorter and the car is more likely to slip in these conditions.
It’s better to drive in a high gear and not to make any sudden jerks on the steering wheel; likewise, it’s safer not to step on the brakes too suddenly. The DGT advises following the tracks made through the snow by the cars that have gone before and if the car does skid, maintain a smooth trajectory if possible.
How to drive in the wind
Windy weather poses a serious risk to motorists by dragging cars off their path and causing debris to fly into the road. In the event of strong winds, the DGT recommends reducing speed considerably to avoid unforeseen events and increase reaction time.
It is safer to drive in lower gears so that the car can grip the road better and the vehicle should be positioned in the centre of the lane. Gentle movements are best (never swerve when it is windy), and to avoid the screen effect, extreme precautions should be taken when overtaking trucks or other bulky vehicles and when exiting tunnels.
