ARCHIVED - San Pedro teen killed instantly by falling lifeguard tower
The 18-year-old was hanging out with friends on the El Mojón beach when the structure collapsed
A night of revelry turned to tragedy for a group of Murcia youngsters when a wooden lifeguard tower collapsed, landing on top of one 18-year-old and killing him instantly.
Local residents reported that around twelve teens were gathered on El Mojón beach in San Pedro del Pinatar at around 2am, listening to music and drinking. Initial investigations indicate that several of the young people may have climbed on top of the lifeguard watchtower, their combined weight toppling it over. The huge wooden structure snapped at the base and hit the victim, who was sitting behind it, on the head.
The Guardia Civil are leading the investigation into the tragic accident and will first estalish whether the lifeguard tower was in poor condition, or if the weight of the teenagers caused it to fall. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation remains open.
A section of El Mojón beach remained cordoned off on August 2, with the lifeguards stationed about 10 metres away from the accident site. Officers from the Local Police of San Pedro del Pinatar and Civil Protection personnel traveled to the area on Tuesday morning to take measurements of the tower and prepare reports that will be incorporated into the investigation.
"The Management of Emergencies and Health Emergencies 061 sent two ambulances, one of them a medicalized emergency unit, whose staff could only certify the death of a boy and transferred two others affected to the Los Arcos del Mar Menor General University Hospital, a boy and a girl, both 18 years old," 112 Emergencias said on its website.
