Santuario de la Virgen del Buen Suceso, Cieza

Santuario de la Virgen del Buen Suceso, Cieza

Sanctuary of the Virgen of Good Deeds, Cieza

The Santuario de la Virgen del Buen Suceso is a small hermitage which is dedicated to the Virgen del Buen Suceso, the patrona of Cieza.  It is located on the Atalaya hillside and has the most spectacular panoramic views of the town and meadows.

This hermitage is next to the Medina Siyâsa Moorish settlement which was abandoned in the 13th century. Although it’s not possible to enter into the fenced off compound which surrounds the excavated area, it is possible to see the site from outside, by walking through the vast area which has yet to be excavated. Less than 10% of the dwellings which would have covered the entire side of this hillside have been excavated to date.

The first stone  of this little chapel was laid on 2nd March in 1962, the initiative to create this viewing point coming from Doctor Serra Peña.  Each year, the fiestas in honour of its patron saint are held on the last Sunday of September.  On the Tuesday preceding these fiestas the residents of Cieza go up to the hermitage en masse and bring the image of the patrona in a Romería down to the church of La Asuncion in the heart of the town below, where it remains  until the following Sunday when the image is transferred back up to the Sanctuary in a large scale Romería with much of the town in attendance.

There is also a walking route up to this hermitage leaving from the heart of Cieza, the PR-MU 11, an 8.5km route . ( Click PR-MU 11)
