ARCHIVED - Search continues for Scottish tourist who disappeared in Lanzarote
Gary Watson disappeared a month ago after travelling to Spain for St Patrick’s Day
It’s just over a month since Scottish man Gary Watson disappeared without trace just hours after landing in Spain, and his frantic family have issued a renewal appeal for information on his whereabouts. Gary reportedly travelled to Lanzarote to celebrate St Patrick’s Day but less than six hours after arriving in the holiday hotspot of Puerto del Carmen, he had vanished.
Police have managed to trace the Scot’s early movements: he checked into the Oasis Apartments at around 5pm and immediately hit the pool, where he posted a photo on Facebook and text his mum to let her know he’d landed. Gary then headed to a popular Celtic pub, Bar 67, where he stayed until around 11.30pm. That was the last time he was seen or heard from.
A huge search operation was launched on March 31 by Bar 67 and neighbouring Paddy’s Point Emerald Isle, but no trace of the tourist has been found. Gary’s mother and his sister Michelle travelled to Lanzarote to participate but have since returned to the UK.
The Scottish man’s mum is adamant that she will travel back to Spain soon to resume the search, which is made all the more urgent by the fact that her son suffers from epilepsy and Type 2 diabetes.
Posters have been distributed across the island and although one woman came forward claiming to have seen a man matching Gary’s description passed out in a doorway close Bar 67, this sighting hasn’t been confirmed.
When he was last seen, Gary was wearing a green and white Celtic FC t-shirt. He is 1.60 metres tall with short black and grey hair, and walks with a slight limp.
Anyone with information regarding Gary’s whereabouts has been asked to phone the Guardia Civil on 062 or to email gc-epjtias@guardiacivil.org
