ARCHIVED - September data reveals seventh month of decreasing unemployment rate in Spain
Only four of the 17 regions in Spain reported higher unemployment figures while the national rate decreased by 2.3%
Although September is historically a month in which the unemployment rate rises, due mostly to the end of temporary summer contracts, this year Spain has registered its largest drop in unemployment during the ninth month since records began.
On a national level the number of unemployed people registered with the public employment services fell by 76,113 in September (-2.3%), making this month the seventh in a row to register a decrease in the unemployment rate, something which has not happened in Spain since 2000.
However, the unemployment data for September doesn’t take into account the people who are included in the ERTE temporary unemployment scheme.
Unemployment figures for September 2021
The new data means that the total number of people without employment was 3,257,802 at the end of last month, the lowest figure since February 2020 (3.24 million).
By sectors, unemployment has fallen in the service sector, with 39,312 fewer unemployed (-1.7%), followed by agriculture (-13,067 unemployed, -8.1%); construction (-12,309 unemployed, -4.5%); industry (-6,668 unemployed, -2.4%). The number of people without previous employment who registered as unemployed in September also fell by 1.7%.
By region, the only four autonomous communities to register increases were Andalucía (+4,416), Asturias (+2,539), Cantabria (+847), and the Balearic Islands (+687), while all other regions registered decreases.
Female unemployment, which was exacerbated during the pandemic, has also been greatly reduced in September, falling by 39,977 women in just one month.
September also saw a 17.8% increase in work contracts (1,923,846 more than in the same month last year), of which 216,688 were permanent – 11.2% of all contracts and 32.7% more than in September 2020.
