ARCHIVED - Sharing is caring: Spain to send Covid vaccines on to Latin America
The Spanish and French governments have both committed to doing their bit for global health by donating a portion of their vaccines to less fortunate countries.
Spain will send between 5 and 10 per cent of the coronavirus vaccines it receives this year on to Latin America under the WHO’s Covax initiative to ensure equal access to Covid vaccines, President Pedro Sánchez has announced.
The announcement came at the Andorra Summit, at which Latin American leaders have brought to light that the region has only received about 8 per cent of the doses of vaccine distributed across the world, despite the fact that the pandemic has been particularly harsh there, accounting for almost 30 per cent of confirmed global Covid-19 deaths.
The Spanish Health Minister, Carolina Darias, has confirmed the news and stressed the importance of ensuring universal access to the vaccines against the virus to put an end to the pandemic.
However, Sr. Sánchez did say that Spain will not be making its donation until it has inoculated at least half of its own adult population.
France, meanwhile, has become the first European country to contribute to the vaccine pool, donating around 100,000 doses of the vaccine against Covid by AstraZeneca to countries in Africa.
