ARCHIVED - Sharp drop in temperatures this weekend: Spain weather forecast Nov 18-20
The warm weather in the south of Spain continues but some areas will experience sub-zero temperatures

A succession of storms and Atlantic fronts have created unsettled weather in much of Spain this week and will continue to bring snowfall in the mountains, frost and heavy rain to a good part of the country in the coming days. The exception is the extreme south and the Mediterranean coast, where temperatures will remain mild, although some showers and isolated rains are expected.
"We are immersed in a typically autumnal situation with the successive passage of frontal systems associated with Atlantic storms that irrigate our territory from west to east," explained Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo, who has predicted up to 100 litres of rain per square metres over the next week or so in Galicia and Cantabria.
The rainfall won’t be as dramatic in the rest of Spain, he said, but it’s possible that central Andalucia and Mallorca will exceed 50 litres over the weekend.
Winds shifting to the northwest at the end of the week will bring a general drop in temperature on Friday and Saturday, dipping the thermometers to the normal level for this time of year, or even lower in some northern areas.
The rain will be locally strong and persistent throughout Friday November 18 in Galicia and Cantabria, possibly extending to other inland points and the Balearic Islands. The storms will be limited to the extreme north on Saturday November 19.
A drop in temperatures will naturally result in a drop in snow level, which on Friday will reach around 1,000 to 2,000 metres in mountainous areas, although the levels will rise again on Saturday to between 1,600 and 2,000 metres.
And while towns like Ávila and Teruel can expect sub-zero temperatures on Saturday, the mercury will remain at a very pleasant 20ºC in the likes of Alicante and Huelva.
Big changes are forecast for Sunday November 20 when the winds will turn to the southwest, raising the temperatures sharply and clearing most areas of frost. The rain will be heaviest in the north, Castilla y León and Extremadura but will extend weakly to the east, hardly touching the Mediterranean coast, where the mercury will remain in the low 20s.
