ARCHIVED - Shock as passenger dies on flight from Spain to the UK
The Jet2 plane was diverted over a medical emergency on the way from Tenerife to Manchester
Passengers aboard a Jet2 flight to Manchester were left traumatised earlier this week when a fellow traveller died on the way from the Spanish island of Tenerife back to the UK. A medical emergency was declared around three hours into the flight on April 2 and the plane was diverted to Newquay in a desperate attempt to save the woman’s life.
The other passengers looked on in horror as the woman was urgently treated by onboard medical staff, who were eventually forced to administer CPR, as the plane descended into the Cornwall airport.
One holidaymaker aboard the Jet2 LS756 flight described the “emotional” scenes: "A few hours into the flight a man was helping a woman he was with to the bathroom. She looked to be in quite a state and was in distress.
"Cabin crew had a chat with them and at one point they had to lay her down in front of the doors where the seats with extra leg room are.
"She was being asked how much pain she was in so that they could relay it back to the captain.
The passenger explained that the woman appeared to 'take a sudden turn' and the cabin crew asked over the system if there were any trained medics on board.
"Then the plane took a very dramatic veer to the right and it was clear something had changed and we needed to land straight away.
"Quite a few people were visibly upset and emotional by what was going on. She passed out, and they had oxygen on board and a defibrillator on board and started performing CPR. They did this for around an hour until we landed at Newquay”.
Two ambulance crews were waiting when the plane touched down on the tarmac in Newquay and the patient was carried off on a stretcher. The flight took off again after a quick refuel and eventually arrived in Manchester at around 10pm.
A Jet2 spokesperson later confirmed that the woman sadly didn’t survive the ordeal: "Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer has sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with the customer’s family and friends at this very difficult time. We would like to express our thanks to our crew, as well as other customers who provided assistance onboard.”
