ARCHIVED - Sierra Nevada unveils extensive renovation plan for its ski resort
The plans for the Granada resort include new ski lifts, more hotels and better parking
With a multi-million euro investment, Cetursa, the company that manages the Sierra Nevada ski resort, has announced its ambitious plans to improve the accessibility and the overall experience for visitors between now and 2030.
Since taking over in 2019, Cetursa has invested 30 million euros in improving the facilities, but the company promises that with the new renovations, the GDP of the province should grow from 2.2% to 2.5% with the creation of more than 1,200 extra jobs.
The strategic plan involves an investment of just over 200 million euros, which should translate into 60 million additional tourist spending, both at the ski resort and in surrounding businesses.
With the hefty budget, up to nine new ski lifts will be installed, Jesús Ibáñez, CEO of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, explained, two of them in time for next season.
Part of this budget will be focused on renovating the old Al Ándalus cable car, which allows visitors to reach the Borreguiles ski area from the Pradollano urbanization, and on the new construction of a double ski lift in El Puente, to facilitate the creation of a space for training and competition, and customer access to the black slopes.
In addition, several of the four-seat ski lifts will be replaced with six-seater ones.
To accommodate the expected 140,000 annual skiers, a 4-star hotel is currently being built on the site of the Telecabina hotel and the AH Trevenque is being renovated to include a spa. To facilitate non-skiers also, the Mirlo Blanco activity complex will be extended to feature attractions for children and families, restaurants and entertainment centres.
Another striking announcement is the creation of a glamping site, a camping area with a capacity for 50 modern tents that will bring all the comforts of a hotel closer to the usual camping experience.
And to top it all off, a completely new urban area will also be developed around the Los Peñones car park with a total of 2,450 beds across hotels, apartments and youth hostels.
