Snow, rain and wintery temperatures: Spain weather forecast Dec 9-12
The weather this week is shaping up to be very unstable and cold in most of Spain
Weather alerts in place for Monday December 9
After weeks and weeks of above-average temperatures and autumn beach days, this Monday morning may have come as a bit of a shock. In most of the country, the air felt frosty and decidedly wintery during the early hours, and a blustery breeze added to the wind chill effect.
This is all thanks to a low pressure over Italy and several other cold air masses that are wafting in Spain’s direction. Things won’t get much better as the days go by: the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting that a DANA will form around the Gulf of Cadiz on Wednesday. This, combined with other pockets of cool air at high altitude will result in widespread rain and snowfall at very low levels.
Monday December 9
A lingering Arctic air mass will interact with an approaching Mediterranean storm on Monday, creating the perfect environment for very heavy rainfall in all of northern Spain and the Balearic Islands. Significant amounts of snow are also forecast during the early morning in Castilla y Leon and Asturias, where red weather alerts have been issued.
There are several other adverse weather alerts in place, including warnings for strong winds and dangerous sea conditions in the Region Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Daytime temperatures will continue to fall across the board – the Canary Islands are the only place where the thermometers will pass 20ºC – and frost will affect the southeast of Spain.
Tuesday December 10
The temperatures will take another nosedive on Tuesday everywhere but the Canary Islands, and yellow weather warnings have been activated in Aragon and Navarra for freezing conditions. In the extreme south of Spain, the mercury will max out around the mid teens.
The snow level will remain quite low, between 500 and 1,000 metres. Tuesday will be rather overcast or cloudy overall and there’s a good chance of showers between the Balearic Islands and the Catalan coast.
Wednesday December 11
On Wednesday, a low pressure system is expected to dominate the entire western Mediterranean and North Africa. As the hours go by, this will extend towards the Atlantic, with a second low centred in the Gulf of Cadiz.
Skies will be generally cloudy throughout the country and showers are expected in the Mediterranean area, the Gulf of Cadiz and the Balearic Islands. This rain could become stormy in parts.
Temperatures will not change significantly in any part of the country but frost will continue affect large areas of inland Spain.
Thursday December 12
Thursday’s weather forecast is almost identical to Wednesday’s, with low pressure in the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Gulf of Cadiz, the latter extending towards the northwest of Spain.
The skies will be very cloudy with rain and showers in the Balearic Islands and throughout the Mediterranean peninsular area, cloudy with possible light rain in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea.
Temperatures will rise slightly in the Mediterranean area and will remain unchanged in the rest of the country and in the Canary Islands.
Frost will be widespread inland.
