ARCHIVED - Social Security offices across Spain call first strike in history
The public servants in Spain will cease operating every Friday morning until the end of May
The CCOO and CSIF unions have confirmed that staff in all Social Security offices in Spain will strike on Fridays for the duration of the month due to “the deterioration of one of the public services with the greatest demand from the public.”
“The lack of staff, the ageing workforce, the delay in the management of benefits and the non-compliance with laws and agreements regarding personnel force us to call the first strike in the history of this organisation,” the unions explained in a joint statement on Thursday May 11.
Workers will down tools every Friday in May between the hours of 10.30am and 11.30am.
The list of complaints is a long one, and the unions have slammed the government’s “lack of commitment” in organising everything from working remotely, schedules, training and productivity to internal promotion, retirement schemes and job stability.
According to CCOO, these failings not only impact the quality of life of Social Security staff, but also affect the customers, who have to deal with lengthy waiting times and the closure of local offices up and down the country.
The Strategic Plan for Social Security, which was implemented to address all of these issues, has failed miserably in the eyes of the unions and the workers they represent.
“Given this chaotic situation, we are forced to raise the level of demand. We regret it, but at this time it is the best option for the recovery of serious and dignified commitments and to offer a dignified service to the public,” the CCOO spokesperson reiterated.
In recent months, and in the face of criticism from the opposition, the Minister of Inclusion and Social Security, José Luis Escrivá, has committed to training 4,000 new staff and extending office hours.
