ARCHIVED - Spain allocates 2 million Covid vaccines to refugees
Spain plans to work closely with the United Nations to ensure that poorer nations receive the vaccines
Speaking on the 70th anniversary of the Convention on the Status of Refugees, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, announced on Monday November 8 that Spain will reserve two million coronavirus vaccines for “humanitarian” purposes, while working closely with the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) to ensure that the jabs reach the places “where they are most needed.”
The president reiterated “how supportive” Spain has been in the face of this “global evil.”
Spain is currently among the top ten vaccine donor countries, after it began to offer doses to nations such as Latin America even before 50% of Spaniards were double jabbed.
The vaccines destined for refugee camps and other humanitarian efforts will come from the stash already destined for donation and will not impact Spain’s own vaccination campaign.
Mr Sanchez said on Monday that he is “very aware” that an adequate number of vaccines “are not reaching the whole world” and that those living in refugee camps “have especially suffered.”
Finally, the president stressed the importance of reaching the goal of vaccinating 70% of the global population by the middle of 2022 as was agreed at the G20 summit in Rome, a feat which Mr Sanchez insisted is "perfectly possible and achievable by the whole of humanity".
