ARCHIVED - Spain and EU asked to work from home to beat Putin
The EU has issued a guide on reducing energy dependence on Russia
The EU has drawn up a new plan with the International Energy Agency with the aim of reducing the reliance of member countries on Russian energy and is asking Spain and other nations to work from home, switch off the heating and air con and drive less.
Europe depends on Russia for its energy supplies, which in turn provides funds for the invasion of Ukraine, and the EU’s nine-point ‘Playing My Part’ plan gives citizens a number of useful tips that could save the average household 450 euros a year.
In addition to driving less and using public transport instead, as well as working from home three days a week, the plan urges people to:
- Turn down the heating in winter and the air conditioning in summer
- Drive more slowly with the car’s air con turned off as this burns less fuel
- Instead of flying, use the train for journeys where possible
- Use public transport, cycle or walk
- The EU also wants cities around Europe to promote car-free Sundays, and has asked citizens to consider improving their home insulation and moving away from petrol and diesel cars.
“Faced with the horrendous scenes of human suffering that we’ve seen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, people in Europe want to take action,” said Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA.
“This guide has easy-to-follow steps that with little or no discomfort on our part can reduce the flow of money to Russia’s military and help put us on a path to a cleaner and more sustainable planet.”
According to the IEA, if everyone followed the plan, 220 million barrels of oil and 17 billion cubic metres of gas could be saved each year, enough to heat almost 20 million homes.
After the war broke out, the EU began looking at alternative energy suppliers to Russia, but as none can be found citizens are being asked to change their lifestyles to break the dependence on Russia.
