Spain and UK sign agreement to improve air and maritime sustainability
The countries will work together to promote sustainable aviation fuel and develop green shipping corridors
Both Spain and the United Kingdom have reasserted their commitment in the fight against climate change by signing two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) and a joint declaration after the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s summit on Friday July 7.
The agreements will focus on three main areas: the promotion of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), the protection of foreign seafarers working in Spanish and British waters and the opening of green maritime corridors in the future.
Sustainable fuels for aviation
The first memorandum of understanding relates to the strategic short and medium-term reduction of net emissions from the aviation sector, which the nations agree is “the clearest path in the short term for the decarbonisation of air transport.”
The UK and Spain are already leading the way in Europe in this field, with several top airlines making the switch from traditional polluting jet fuels to more sustainable alternative biofuels.
With the signing of this MoU, a framework will be established to continue advancing in this area.
Conditions for seafarers
Earlier this year the UK implemented a Seafarers Wages Act to increase pay and protect maritime workers regularly entering its waters. Building on this step, Spain and Britain will work together to raise the standards for seafarers traversing the Anglo-Spanish shipping routes.
Green shipping corridors
Finally, as part of the Clydebank Declaration, Spain also plans to establish green shipping corridors with UK with the express aims of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable economic growth.
The creation of these routes will involve the use of zero emission fuel or energy, the installation of refueling or recharging infrastructure at ports and the deployment of zero emission capable vessels for clean and environmentally friendly shipping.
