Spain boycotts arms sales from Israel amid ongoing conflict
Spain has cancelled an order of 15.3 million bullets intended for the Guardia Civil
The Spanish government has announced that it will no longer purchase arms from Israel due to the country's repeated violations of UN resolutions and human rights. The decision comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, with Israel facing criticism from the international community for its actions.
Spain’s Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, revealed that the country has cancelled a major order for 15.3 million 9mm Parabellum bullets from the Israeli company Guardian Defense & Homeland Security SA.
The deal, worth 6.6 million euros, was initially placed in February but has been scrapped in light of the ongoing conflict.
“The Spanish government has maintained its commitment not to sell arms to the Israeli state since the outbreak of the armed conflict in Gaza,” said official government sources, who added that “other Israeli companies will be excluded as bidders in other arms purchases currently being processed by the Guardia Civil.”
Back in October, Spanish Prime Minister and President of the Government Pedro Sánchez, called for urgent diplomatic intervention to resolve the crisis in the Middle East during a conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The situation in the Middle East has deteriorated significantly in recent months. In October, Israel was subjected to a large-scale missile bombardment by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, marking the second such attack in recent months. Israel responded with its own series of severe bombings a couple of weeks later, further escalating the conflict.
By refusing to purchase arms from Israel, Spain is sending a clear message that it will not support countries that disregard international law and human rights. Furthermore, Mr Grande-Marlaska has vowed that in the future, all companies in Israel will be boycotted.
The Spanish government's decision to boycott Israeli arms sales is a significant development in the EU's relationship with Israel. President Sánchez has now called on all EU countries to follow Spain's lead, potentially marking a new era in EU-Israel relations.
