Spain braces for another stormy week: Weather forecast Oct 28-31
Despite the widespread rain, daytime temperatures will shoot up in most of Spain at the start of the week
Weather alerts in Spain on Monday October 28
Following a wet, windy and noticeably cooler weekend, a powerful storm system is set to sweep across Spain during the last week of October, bringing yet more rain and strong gusts that will impact a large part of the country.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued several warnings for the next few days, predicting a fairly prolonged period of adverse weather conditions.
This incoming storm, fuelled by a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), will begin to take hold on Monday October 28 as it moves towards the southwest of Spain and positions itself near the Gulf of Cadiz. This will set the stage for several days of unstable weather, with the east and south of the country bearing the brunt of the storm.
The heaviest rains are expected to be concentrated in and around Catalonia, Castellón, the Strait of Gibraltar and the south-east of Spain, where the showers are expected to be intense and could last for several hours at a time.
Orange weather alerts for storms have been issued in Andalucía, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the city of Ceuta, while yellow alerts are active in Castilla-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia and the city of Melilla.
From Tuesday October 29, the entire Mediterranean coast will be particularly hard hit, as easterly winds bring a surge of humidity to the area. This will lead to intense showers, potentially reaching torrential levels in some localities, accompanied by strong gusts of wind.
As the storm reaches its peak, the downpours will spread to central Spain while continuing to batter the Mediterranean, although Barcelona and Girona should be spared from the worst of the rain.
An orange weather alert for storms has been issued in the Valencian Community, while yellow alerts are active in Andalucía, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon and the Region of Murcia.
On Wednesday October 30, the rain should ease off slightly in most of the southeast, but very heavy downpours are still forecast in the extreme south of Andalucía, along with large parts of northern Spain.
Yellow weather alerts for storms have been issued in Aragon, Catalonia and the Valencian Community.
While the storm’s trajectory is still uncertain, it seems likely that the bad weather will begin to subside on Thursday October 31. Even so, showers are expected to continue in several regions, with the southwest quadrant and the Balearic Sea potentially being the most affected.
Despite the stormy outlook, daytime temperatures will actually shoot up on Monday and Tuesday compared to the weekend. However, the mercury will take a sharp dip on Wednesday in the southwest and along the coasts of Almería, Granada and Murcia.
