Spain confirms hottest April in 60 years
Temperatures in southern Spain approached 40ºC on several days
April 2023 has officially gone down in history as the hottest, driest fourth month since records began 62 years ago. Across the country, the mercury stabilised at an average of 14.9ºC, which is a significant 3ºC higher than normal.
What’s more, barely 22% of the usual amount of rain fell.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) first started keeping tabs on these extreme weather events back in 1961 and the closest April temperature-wise was in 2011, when the thermometers were 0.1ºC cooler than this year.
Of course, many parts of the country beat the Spanish average out of the park and inland areas of Andalucía, eastern Extremadura and southwest of Castilla-La Mancha were a sweltering 4 or 5ºC hotter than normal.
With the weather behaving more like July than April, the station at Córdoba airport recorded an astonishing 38.8ºC on April 27. Not far behind were Morón de la Frontera and Granada and Seville airports, which reached 37.4ºC and 36.9ºC, respectively.
This is in striking contrast to the frigid temperatures experienced in some provinces at the beginning of the month: At night, the temperatures dropped to -8.1ºC overnight in Molina de Aragon on April 5th and -6.9ºC in Burgos airport.
April was also an extremely dry month and the paltry 14.2 litres per square metre of water that fell hardly touched the sides of the country’s exhausted reservoirs. What little rain arrived stuck mostly to northern Spain, although there were a few downpours further south towards the end of the month.
