Spain considers increasing the price of cigarettes in its strategy against smoking
Spain is one of the cheapest countries in Europe for tobacco, each pack costing an average of just 4.80 euros
The Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention and Control of Smoking, which the Ministry of Health is preparing to make a reality this year, includes a range of fiscal measures that tax the price of tobacco. Ultimately though, any price increase on cigarettes and other tobacco products will have to be approved by the Ministry of Finance.
Spain continues to have one of the lowest prices for tobacco in Europe, with an average pack costing a mere 4.80 euros. In contrast, Germany, France and Ireland have significantly higher prices, ranging from nearly seven euros to 13 euros per pack.
By increasing the price of tobacco, the health authorities aim to discourage young people from taking up the habit. Additionally, the plan involves introducing a special tax on electronic cigarettes containing nicotine, further limiting accessibility to these products.
"All scientific societies recommend that it be done," a Ministry source confirmed.
For years now, medical and scientific societies have been asking, in line with the anti-smoking strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO), for tax increases on nicotine products since higher prices are proven to reduce consumption, encourage smokers to give up tobacco and discourage young people from adopting the habit of smoking in the first place.
