ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update November 29: incidence rate soars over the weekend
The 14-day cumulative rate in Spain jumped almost 30 points as infections and hospitalisations continue to increase
The coronavirus pandemic continues its upward trend across Europe and in Spain, where the cumulative incidence rate has soared by another 27 points over the weekend, the highest figure documented since mid-July. The data, published on Monday November 29, coincides with the discovery of the first case of the Omicron variant in the country. The strain, which Spain’s Ministry of Health has described as “more transmissible, more virulent” was detected in a passenger arriving at Madrid’s Barajas airport from South Africa.
As a preventative measure, Spain has already suspended flights from South Africa and from today, will only admit UK passengers who are fully vaccinated.
Cumulative incidence rate
On Monday, Spain’s 14-day rate had reached 199.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a dramatic rise of nearly 30 points in just a couple of days.
Navarra is now firmly in the red zone, with a staggering 571.84 cases, while the healthiest figure is seen in Extremadura, with 84.96 cases, closely followed by Ceuta, with 96.20 cases, and Andalucía, with just 98.74 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia are now well above the national average, registering 209.85 and 212.67 cases respectively.
Those under the age of 11 continue to have the highest cumulative incidence rate by far with 325.69 cases, although the EU has now given the green light to vaccinating younger children with a low dose of the Pfizer jab.
Covid infections
A further 22,911 Covid infections were reported on Monday, 2,877 of which were diagnosed over the weekend. These numbers are considerably higher than the same day last week, when 15,875 cases were registered.
In the past two weeks, 94,438 positives were recorded, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,153,923.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 3,780 patients admitted to hospitals across Spain with Covid (up from 3,385 on Friday) and 673 people are being treated for more serious symptoms in the ICU (up from 597).
The occupancy rate of beds stands at 3.05% (2.73% before the weekend) while in ICUs it has jumped from 6.50% to 7.33%.
The Ministry of Health has reported 53 more deaths, compared to 22 last Monday. In the last week alone, 90 people have lost their lives, bringing the overall death toll to 88,008.
Vaccination data
To date, 89.2% of the target population (37,586,582 people) are fully vaccinated, while 90.9% of those aged over 12 (38,299,758 people) have received at least one dose.
On a positive note, between fears of the advance of the Omicron variant and the implementation of Covid certs in many communities, the Ministry of Health reported on Monday that vaccination uptake has increased by 50% in the last week, with 128,000 first doses administered in the past 7 days.
