Spain embraces the future with several new road signs
The signs reflect the growing number of electric vehicles on roads in Spain

Spain’s road landscape has been undergoing major changes in recent years, driven by the growing presence of electric vehicles, scooters and the establishment of Low Emission Zones. To keep up with this evolution, the Ministry of Transport is introducing a series of new road signs that all motorists will need to keep an eye out for.
First up, we have signs indicating electric charging stations, which provide information on their location, whether they're inside or outside service stations and their operating hours. With electric vehicles on the rise, these signs will become a familiar sight, making it easier for drivers to locate charging spots.
Next, the Circular Order OC 2/2024 has introduced signage for areas where tickets can be purchased for the ferry to Morocco, especially during the busy Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE) period. This addition ensures that travellers have the information they need to plan their journeys efficiently.
The third type of sign is dedicated to indicating safe and protected rest and parking areas, a welcome sight for transporters and long-distance drivers. These signs will enhance security and provide peace of mind during much-needed breaks.
Spain's Road Network is also getting a visual refresh, with a new corporate image positioned at the beginning and end of roads.
Finally, new signs will delineate Spain's 15 Hydrographic Demarcations, where rivers traverse the roads. These include well-known regions such as the Guadalquivir, Ebro and Segura, ensuring that motorists are aware of the unique characteristics of each area.
Other new signs
In the last few months, a few other new signs have been introduced that many drivers might not be familiar with yet.
One of the most notable new signs is the S-70, which alerts drivers to a situation where multiple lanes merge into one. This sign will be a common sight on roads with complex lane configurations, helping drivers navigate these transitions safely.
Additionally, the S-71 and S-72 signs indicate two or more lanes ahead, providing advanced warning for drivers to adjust their speed and position accordingly.
And lastly, there’s the P-35 sign, warning drivers of upcoming forks in the road, allowing them to prepare for their chosen route.
