The cumulative incidence rate is approaching 1,000 cases in Spain
Spokesperson for the Spanish Society of General and Family Physicians, Lorenzo Armenteros, has warned this week that Spain is entering its eighth Covid wave as the silent seventh passed by largely unnoticed.
“Although we do not have data on most of the positives due to coronavirus, because we only know the incidence in those over 60 years of age, the cases that we see in consultations, the new cases in young people and the cases that could be added from self-tests that patients do, we would be in an eighth wave," Armenteros explained.
Daily infections and hospitalisations have peaked in the last couple of weeks, and many Primary Care physicians claim that they are treating more and more younger people for Covid-related illnesses, even if the official data doesn’t reflect this.
Hospital pressure is arguably the most important indicator, and this has been climbing steadily. On Friday July 1 admissions had grown by more than half a point to now exceed 5% occupancy, a threshold that moves Spain from a level of controlled circulation to low risk, according to the Ministry of Health.
Six autonomous communities have now moved up a risk level-the Balearic Islands, Castilla La-Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Madrid and the Basque Country-while La Rioja is feeling the most pressure with 11% of ICU beds occupied by Covid patients.
In the last week, 312 people have died, bringing the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 108,111.
The cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has risen 155 points since the last update to stand at 996.25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, remaining at medium risk.
Ten regions have already exceeded the 1,000-case mark while Madrid and La Rioja are now above 1,500, pushing them into the high-risk category.
As has been the case for several weeks now, Andalucía has the lowest 14-day rate with just 364.70 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community remain well below the Spanish national average, with 770.91 and 715.29 cases, respectively.
In the past seven days, a total of 136,364 new coronavirus cases have been registered, which brings the total number of infections since the health crisis began to more than 12.8 million.
The vaccination campaign is progressing slowly, and 25 million people, or 53.7% of the population, have now received a booster dose.
To date, 39,106,675 people, or 92.7% of the population over the age of 12, have received both vaccinations while 39,242,986 people (93%) have received at least one dose.
