ARCHIVED - Spain gears up for Black Friday amid supply shortage fears
Friday November 26 is traditionally one of the busiest shopping days in Spain
Savvy shoppers throughout Spain plan to head out in their droves this Black Friday on November 26 to bag a bargain as the annual Christmas campaign begins, but many are plagued with niggling doubts caused by the rumoured supply shortages throughout Europe.
While toy manufacturers, as well as food and beverage distributors, have hinted at lower stock levels and inflated prices, several larger companies in Spain such as El Corte Ingles, have insisted that an abundance of products will be available this festive season, as always.
According to a survey carried out by Milanuncios, Spaniards will fork out an average of 242 euros on Black Friday, with the majority gravitating towards clothes and accessories (37%). Some 34.2% of consumers hope to find a bargain in the technology sector and this year, and 54% of shoppers plan to make their purchases online due to the convenience and perceived lower prices.
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, things are a bit tighter for most consumers this festive season, with 47% of Spaniards admitting that their overall budget for November 26 is lower than in 2020.
By gender, more men are expected to splash the cash than women, while youngsters aged between 18 and 24 years should have the most to spend, at 274 euros. Of these, at least 15% intend to invest in second-hand products.
According to the survey, those living in Castilla-La Mancha plan to spend the most on Black Friday purchases (344 euros), followed by Andalucía and Aragon (both 297 euros.)
The global supply crisis continues to take centre stage in the run-up to Christmas and despite assurances from manufacturers and retailers, 49% of Spaniards are concerned about the possible effects. In fact, 37% have considered focusing on used goods, with a Milanuncios spokesperson claiming that the second-hand market “is gaining strength and becoming the alternative to the conventional market” due to cost savings and added sustainability.
