ARCHIVED - Spain gets ready for the big freeze: weather forecast Feb 6-9
Temperatures will be as much as 3ºC colder than normal in most of Spain this week
A mass of freezing, humid air will begin to make its way across Spain from Monday February 6, pulling the temperatures down drastically in the coming days to as much as 3ºC below normal.
According to Aemet, from the beginning of the week a storm will form in the Balearic Islands, intensifying the frosts in a good part of the country and even leading to snow in places.
Monday February 6 will begin cloudy overall with a general chance of scattered rainfall, likely to be more intense in the Valencian Community in the afternoon.
The snow levels will drop to just 800 metres in the south, and Valencia, Andalucia and the Region of Murcia are all on alert for snow storms.
There’ll be a widespread drop in temperature, particularly at night, when the mercury will fall to the low single digits in southern Spain.
The rain will begin to strengthen on Tuesday February 7 with locally strong and persistent showers accompanied by hail forecast in eastern Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.
It will be a cloudy day overall and the thermometers will drop almost universally, most notably in the south. The evening will be a little milder but the temperature still won’t climb above 4 or 5ºC in Alicante and Murcia.
Thirteen communities remain on alert for freezing episodes and snow storms on Tuesday.
The instability from the east will continue on Wednesday February 8, producing cloudy skies and showers in the Mediterranean area, which will be stronger on the southern coast of Catalonia, Valencia and western Andalucia.
This rain should subside towards the afternoon but the day is unlikely to brighten up.
The snow levels should rise to around 1,200 m in the southeast and while the temperatures will increase a little in the north, it will still be bitterly cold in the south.
Blustery easterly winds will bring an additional chill to the Mediterranean coast and frosts are likely in the southeastern mountains.
Aragon, the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community and Catalonia are on orange alert for low temperatures, wind and adverse sea conditions.
The forecast for Thursday February 9 is still a bit uncertain but Aemet believes the weather will begin stabilise somewhat, although it still promises to be unsettled in the Mediterranean area, with probable rainfall in the southeast, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.
Scattered showers could extend to Andalucia and southern Aragón during the day.
There’s little chance of snow on Thursday and while the daytime temperatures should increase ever so slightly, widespread frosts are forecast in the morning.
A strong easterly wind will create a wind chill in most of the country, more intense in the Balearic Islands and the southeast coast.
