ARCHIVED - Spain knocked out of World Cup by Morocco
The violent disturbances expected by police failed to materialise after Morocco’s historic win
Spain’s dreams have been shattered in the Qatar World Cup 2022 after they were beaten by Morocco on penalties last night, Tuesday December 6.
The two teams drew 0-0 even after extra time, and it finally went to penalties. Spain failed to score any of their three penalties, with Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saving two.
It was Paris St-Germain player Hakimi, who incidentally was born and raised in Madrid, the one who scored the winning penalty to knock Spain out at the Round of 16 and put Morocco through to the Quarter-Finals.
This is the second World Cup in a row that Spain has been eliminated in the last-16 stage on penalties, after losing to Russia in 2018.
For Morocco, meanwhile, this is the furthest they’ve ever reached in a World Cup so far, and now have a chance of facing England in the Semi-Finals, if both teams beat the odds and get that far.
Peaceful celebrations
Spain has a large Moroccan community, and riot police were preparing for mass disturbances and civil unrest following the game, because similar scenes had taken place in Belgium after Morocco beat them.
However, while there was more rioting in Belgium and the Netherlands last night, the Morocco fans in Spain celebrated – for the most part – calmly and peacefully.
There was a fight between Spain and Morocco fans in Vélez-Málaga, Andalucía, but no one was reported seriously injured.
