The video of the ‘Hero of Tábara’ tackling the terrifying forest fire in Spain single-handedly went viral
A summer of heatwaves gave rise to devastating forest fires throughout Spain, but one humble man captured the hearts of millions as videos emerged of him single-handedly tackling a blaze that threatened to swallow up farmland in his municipality of Losacio in Zamora. The shocking footage shows Ángel Martín tossing down his tools as the wind changed direction, and running for his life through fields even as the flare engulfed him.
Mr Martín fought until the last minute, spraying water from his tractor onto the blaze, until he realised that no more could be done and he fled, his clothes alight.

Since that fateful day in July, the 53-year-old has been in a hospital in Valladolid, suffering from burns that covered 80% of this body. Sadly, on Tuesday October 25, the man who has been christened the ‘Hero of Tábara’, has lost his battle and passed away.
The Losacio fire, which was eventually brought under control on July 25, destroyed more than 30,000 hectares near the surroundings of the Sierra de la Culebra. It will go down in history as one of the worst wildfires of the year in Spain.
The fire originated in Losacio on July 17 due to lightning strikes and destroyed a total of 31,473.13 hectares, surpassing the fires in the Sierra de la Culebra and many others across the country.
The blaze which ultimately resulted in the death of Ángel Martín was responsible for three other tragedies: forestry worker Daniel Gullón was killed on duty on July 17; Victoriano Antón, who lost his life in those first moments of the fire; and Eugenio Ratón, from Sesnadez, who died on Tuesday August 18 as a result of the injuries he sustained.
