ARCHIVED - Spain on alert for storms and high temperatures: weather outlook July 4-7
Spain is in for several muggy days with heavy rain forecast in many areas
July has begun with a bang in Spain and many areas experienced scorching temperatures in excess of 37ºC over the weekend. The mercury dropped somewhat on Sunday July 3 across the country with the exception of some regions along the Mediterranean coast such as Murcia and Valencia, where the thermometers scarcely dipped below 35ºC.
The weather will be a little more mixed this week with cool air pockets combining with warmer surface masses to create scattered storms in the northern part of Spain, particularly in Navarra, on Monday July 4.
Elsewhere, a rise in temperatures is expected for the most part with the mercury topping out at 37ºC in areas of the Tagus Valley and in most southern areas, while the Balearic Islands should see highs of 35ºC.
It’s likely to be a muggy day in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, where locally strong storms are forecast with the mercury remaining high.
Maximum temperatures on Monday:
Alicante: 31ºC
Almería: 31ºC
Málaga: 29ºC
Murcia: 37ºC
Tuesday July 5 promises to be another mixed day with storms forecast in the east and north of Spain while Madrid, the Balearic Islands and Castilla-La Mancha are all on yellow alert for extremely high temperatures.
The day will begin with cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon with little change in temperature for the rest of the country.
Maximum temperatures on Tuesday:
Alicante: 32ºC
Almería: 30ºC
Málaga: 29ºC
Murcia: 35ºC
Heavy rains and storms are forecast in Aragon, Castilla y Leon and Galicia on Wednesday July 6, where yellow weather alerts are in place. Both the Balearic and Canary Islands will be cloudy with the possibility of blustery weather while it will be a hazy start to the day along the Mediterranean coast.
Temperatures are on the rise in the southwest and Galicia, with the mercury easily exceeding 35ºC in western Andalucía and the Guadalquivir valley.
Maximum temperatures on Wednesday:
Alicante: 32ºC
Almería: 27ºC
Málaga: 27ºC
Murcia: 32ºC
The weather will stabilise considerably on Thursday July 7, although cloudy skies will prevail in the early morning with storms likely in eastern Catalonia. These will clear as the day moves on and most of the country can look forward to clear skies and dry weather in the afternoon.
High haze is expected in the eastern Canary Islands, the southeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
Temperatures will tend to drop in the east and the Balearic Islands but the mercury will continue to climb in the west of the country.
The maximum will remain above 35ºC in western Andalucía and the Guadalquivir valley and won’t dip below 30ºC in the Canary Islands.
Maximum temperatures on Thursday:
