ARCHIVED - Spain plans to limit alcohol consumption in restaurants by promoting water
The government in Spain wants establishments to promote the Mediterranean diet and exclude alcoholic beverages
It’s no secret that most Spaniards and expats enjoy a tipple, but alcohol consumption has long been a sticking point in Spain. In an attempt to promote a healthier, booze-free lifestyle, the Ministry of Health is launching a new initiative asking restaurants to play their part in limiting alcohol consumption, by pushing Mediterranean-inspired menus that offer water “by default” as the primary drink.
The proposal has been included in the Cardiovascular Health Strategy and is expected to gain the support of the government on Wednesday April 27, along with the plan to limit alcoholic beverages in cafeterias, vending machines and snack dispensers in public administration buildings and educational facilities.
One of the main points of the document recommends collaborating “with restaurant establishments to promote the Mediterranean diet as a model of heart-healthy eating, without including alcohol consumption.
Another objective involves a commitment to "regulate the obligation of restaurants to offer tap water by default on the menus," which should now be available free of charge across Spain.
In all, the Cardiovascular Health Strategy proposes 32 general objectives aimed at reducing cardiovascular diseases, which in 2019 affected 9.8% of the population in Spain and caused 37.4% of all deaths in the EU.
The main contributing factor to cardiovascular diseases is smoking, and the strategy plans to drastically reduce the number of people who smoke in Spain to no more 10% by 2040.
To achieve this, a number of initiatives will aim to "delay or avoid" the start of smoking in younger people and "introduce advances in the current regulation of smoking." The government is committed to expanding smoke-free spaces in the community and certain tobacco products, such as electronic cigarettes, will be given the same treatment as traditional smoking products, which are not allowed to be advertised.
