Spain recognises Palestinian State amidst Israeli criticism
The Spanish government hopes its decision will help to bring about peace in the Middle East

Spain, Ireland and Norway all formally recognised a Palestinian state this Tuesday May 28, 2024, a move that has been condemned by Israel as a “reward” for Hamas amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has lasted for over seven months now.
The three European nations believe their recognition carries strong symbolic weight, potentially encouraging other countries to follow suit. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasised that this recognition is not intended as a gesture against Israel but as a step towards achieving lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
“Recognition of the State of Palestine is not only a matter of historic justice… It is also an essential requirement if we are all to achieve peace,” Sánchez stated. He reiterated Spain’s rejection of Hamas, which opposes the two-state solution and attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over a thousand people and taking dozens hostage.
In Israel’s retaliation for the attack, more than 30,000 people have been killed in Gaza.
The decision by Spain and other European nations to recognise Palestine as a State means that 145 out of 193 United Nations member states now recognise Palestinian statehood.
Sánchez clarified that the Palestinian state should be viable, with the West Bank and Gaza connected and East Jerusalem as its capital, adhering to pre-1967 borders, something he insisted was necessary for the two-state solution to work.
