ARCHIVED - Spain registers the lowest number of births in 81 years
Just 329,812 new babies were born in Spain in 2022

Spain registered the lowest number of births since 1941 last year, with the country welcoming just 329,812 newborns in the 12 month period – that’s a mere 903 babies per day, 79 fewer than in pre-pandemic 2019.
In the entire country, only four regions saw their birth rate increase: Madrid, where the figure grew by 1.68% tops the list, followed by Castilla y León, with 0.77% more; Asturias, 0.52% more; and the Valencian Community, up 0.36%.
Bringing up the rear is Castilla-La Mancha, which recorded 7.44% fewer babies last year compared to 2021, Navarra (-6.80%) and the Canary Islands (-5.38%).
Along the same lines, 132,558 more deaths than births were registered last year, which doesn’t bode well for population growth in Spain. Fatalities on the whole were up 3.26% compared to the previous 12-month period and this negative difference occurred in all communities bar Madrid, with 2,136 more births than deaths; and Murcia, with 318; in addition to the autonomous cities of Melilla (377) and Ceuta (96).
However, as the country emerges from the dark days of the coronavirus pandemic the data is taking a step in the right direction, as in the first four weeks of 2023, only 38,543 people have died in Spain. This is 4,148 fewer people than in the same period of 2022 (with 42,691) and the lowest figure in those same weeks since 2020.
The low birth rate is hardly surprising considering a very recent survey shows that starting a family is at the very bottom of the list of priorities for people in Spain under the age of 45. According to The Family Watch study, the most important goal for 73% of people is travelling, followed by professional development (65%) and further education (50%).
However, the number of younger people who want to have children at some point has actually increased to 62%, which is a large jump on the 26% wanting a family during the pandemic.
